TAKEAWAY:  The Holy Spirit is the sole source of every spiritual gift. Believers do not achieve gifts through spiritual effort or maturity. The Spirit distributes them as He alone decides.

HEAD CHANGE:  Spiritual gifts are not a leaderboard. The fruit of the Spirit, not the frequency of spiritual gifts, is the true measure of spiritual maturity.

HEART CHANGE:  The church is called to interdependence, not independence. Every member of the body is needed. The body is not complete without each person contributing what they have been given.

LIFE CHANGE:  We must be practitioners, not merely students. The first-century church was marked by much power and little talk.

What does it actually mean to be a church shaped by the Holy Spirit rather than simply a church that talks about the Holy Spirit? In this message drawn from 1 Corinthians 12, we explore Paul's urgent call to the church at Corinth, a community overflowing with spiritual gifts yet struggling to understand their true purpose. Paul makes something unmistakably clear: every spiritual gift, whether wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, prophecy, or tongues, flows from one source, the Holy Spirit, and every gift exists for one purpose, the building up of the whole body. This is not a message about spiritual trophies or personal achievement. The Spirit distributes, and we receive. That single truth dismantles pride, insecurity, and every unhealthy dynamic that tends to grow up around conversations about spiritual gifts. We are challenged to stop asking what we are getting out of our faith community and start asking what we are giving to it. Interdependence, not independence, is the mark of a spiritually mature body. When we understand that our gifts are manifestations of God making himself known through ordinary people, the entire posture of how we gather together begins to shift. We are not after a gifted church. We are after a Spirit-formed church, and that changes everything.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. Have you ever witnessed spiritual gifts being abused or manipulated? Have you ever been in a church environment where the Spirit was acknowledged in words but never actually expected to show up? How did either experience affect your understanding of what the church should be?

  2. What does it do to your understanding of spiritual gifts to know that they are distributed, not earned? Does that feel freeing or unsettling, and why?

  3. "We have drifted into consumer Christianity. We've said, what am I getting out of this? And the question that Paul is after here in 1 Corinthians is, what are you giving to this." Where do you see consumer Christianity showing up in your own life or in church culture more broadly?

  4.  What do you think healthy accountability around spiritual gifts looks like in a local church? Why is that kind of structure important rather than restrictive?

PRAYER:

God, we thank you that you have not left us to figure out life or community on our own. You have given us your Spirit, and your Spirit distributes gifts not to make us impressive, but to make this body whole. Form us into a church where the sick are prayed over boldly, where strangers are welcomed hospitably, where the skeptic can encounter you genuinely, and where every person who walks through our doors finds that you are unmistakably present. May we be practitioners, not merely students. May we be expectant, not merely prepared. And may everything we do be done so that this body is built up and your name is glorified. In Jesus name, amen.

"A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other."
